One of today’s most exciting British tenors, David Butt Philip appears at major international stages. An alumnus of the Jette Parker Yong Artists Programme of the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, his recent debuts in roles such the title role in Zemlinsky’s Der Zwerg, directed by Tobias Kratzer at the Deutsche Oper Berlin, Florestan (Fidelio) at the Prague National Theatre and later in Kratzer’s new production for Covent Garden, and Bacchus (Ariadne auf Naxos) at the Edinburgh International Festival have earned him critical and public acclaim. In the 2021/22 season, prior to his Salzburg Festival debut in Kát’a Kabanová, he appeared as Grigory (Boris Godunov) and Laertes in Brett Dean’s Hamlet for his debut at the Metropolitan Opera, and sang for the first time at Washington National Opera in gala concerts under Evan Rogister. He also returned to the Deutsche Oper Berlin for Der Zwerg and made his role debut with the same company as Lohengrin.

David was born and brought up in Wells in Somerset and began his musical training as a chorister at Peterborough Cathedral. He trained at the Royal Northern College of Music, the Royal Academy of Music and the National Opera Studio. In autumn 2014 David made his English National Opera debut as Rodolfo/La Bohème to huge critical acclaim. He reprised the role in 2015 for the Zorlu Centre in Istanbul and for English Touring Opera in venues throughout the UK.

British tenor David Butt Philip was born in Somerset and sang as a chorister at Peterborough Cathedral. He trained as a baritone at the Royal Northern College of Music and the Royal Academy of Music. He retrained as a tenor after performing for Glyndebourne Festival in 2010, and subsequently became a Jerwood Young Artist in 2011, winning the John Christie Award and singing Rodolfo (La bohème) for Glyndebourne on Tour. Since 2014 he has sung for companies including English National Opera, Opera North, Glyndebourne, Opera Holland Park, Teatro Real, Madrid and Deutsche Oper Berlin, his repertory including Froh (Das Rheingold), Rodolfo, Pinkerton (Madama Butterfly), Luigi (Il tabarro), Laca (Jenůfa), Folco (Isabeau), the title role of Der Zwerg, Robert Devereux (Gloriana) and Hamlet and Laertes (Brett Dean’s Hamlet). Butt Philip’s concert performances include Dream of Gerontius with Mark Elder at the Bridgewater Hall, and at Vienna Musikverein, Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony with the Yomiuri Nippon Symphony Orchestra, London Philharmonic Orchestra and Berlin Radio Symphony Orchestra, Britten’s War Requiem in Lisbon, Montpellier and for ENO, Mahler’s Das klagende Lied with the LPO under Vladimir Jurowski and a recital at the Wigmore Hall.
